Scion XB and Toyota Oil Consumption issues

So I have a 2008 Scion xb, which at around 70-80,000 miles, started using an alarming amount of oil.  This uses the same engine as some Toyotas built in the same period, which are also having this issue.

After doing some research on the web, I found out this was becoming a common problem for many Scion owners, as well as other Toyota owners that have cars with the 2.4 liter engine.

It seems there was an issue with the pistons and piston rings becoming fouled, and not allowing oil be scraped back down into the oil pan when the engine is running. The result is that oil stays in the combustion chamber, and gets burned off.

After many complaints, Toyota finally issued extended warranties to owners, covering their engines to 150k miles for this problem. If your car is determined to have this issue, they would basically rebuilt the engine, with new pistons and rings to remedy the situation.  Sounds great right? Well, here comes the rub…before they will agree to do the rebuild and fix your car, they have to do an “Oil consumption test”, which requires you to take the car in, have them top off the oil, then they seal up your dipstick and oil drain plug to make sure you don’t tamper with it.  After you drive 1000 miles, you take it back in, where they break the seal and see how much oil has been used. If more than a quart is gone, they will rebuild your engine.  Here’s the problem folks are running into.  The dealership overfills the crankcase by almost a whole extra quart of oil, so even if you have the issue, when you go back to have the oil level checked, it appears normal. Not cool.

Take a look at my youtube video that talks about this, and how I used a common additive called “Seafoam” to remedy my situation.  I started using this before every oil change, and my oil consumption problem has stopped. I can’t recommend this stuff high enough. I use it in all my cars, and the engines run flawlessly. I expect them to last a long time if I keep up with this proces

This stuff works great, and I use it in all my cars now about 50-100 miles prior to changing my oil. I pour half a can in the crank case, and the other half in the gas tank, which cleans your injectors and fuel system as well. I can’t recommend this stuff high enough. Since I started using this process, my vehicle engines run flawlessly.  I expect them to last a long time if I keep up with this routine.
